In professional sports science, there is a magic number that separates progress from muscular catastrophe: the 1.3 ratio. 1. What is the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR)?
ACWR is a metric that compares the "fatigue" you have accumulated in the last week against the "fitness" you have built over the last month. It is, in essence, a measure of how much you are surprising your body with new stimuli.
- Acute Load (A): The average training load of the last 7 days. It represents immediate fatigue.
- Chronic Load (C): The average of the last 28 days. It represents your load capacity or physical "armor."
The ratio is obtained by dividing A by C (A/C). If the result is 1.0, you are maintaining your level. But the secret lies in controlled growth.
2. The "Sweet Spot": Between 0.8 and 1.3
Research led by Dr. Tim Gabbett shows that when the ratio stays between 0.8 and 1.3, the risk of injury is minimal and adaptation is optimal. This is the "Sweet Spot."
However, when the ratio exceeds 1.5 (the "Danger Zone"), the risk of suffering an injury in the following 7-10 days skyrockets exponentially. How do we measure load? We use TRIMP (Training Impulse). Not all 10K runs are equal. An easy 10K has a low TRIMP; a 10K at race pace has a very high TRIMP.
Aura analyzes your heart rate zones second by second to assign a TRIMP value to each session. This allows us to compare apples to apples: a 30-minute interval session can generate the same fatigue as a 90-minute easy run. 4. How to apply the 1.3 Rule in your daily life
- Do not double your volume: The old "10% weekly" myth is only a rough approximation. Aura allows you to be more aggressive if your chronic load is high, or slams the brakes if you are coming back from a break.
- Watch your Readiness: The 1.3 ratio is structural, but your Readiness is systemic. If your ratio is 1.2 (safe) but your Readiness is LOW (sick), Aura will prioritize your health and ask you to stop.
